Description: The story of “Gunday” (2014) begins with the backdrop of Bangladesh’s independence following the 1971 war. Among the many affected by the partition are two orphans, Bikram Bose (Ranveer Singh) and Bala Bhattacharya (Arjun Kapoor). They cross paths with Lateef (Pankaj Tripathi), who offers them food in exchange for smuggling guns. Lateef faces a difficult choice when one of his clients, an army officer, demands one of the boys as a sex slave, threatening to take Lateef’s daughter if he refuses. Initially, Lateef selects Bala, but Bikram insists on taking his place. However, Bala refuses to abandon his friend and returns to rescue Bikram, leading to the officer’s death. This event binds them as partners in crime.
As the army pursues them, Lateef is killed while trying to protect the duo. Bikram and Bala escape to Calcutta, where they start working at a restaurant. After enduring mistreatment and humiliation, they discover a lucrative opportunity in stealing coal. Over time, they grow into adults who dominate the coal theft business, often clashing with their rival, Dibakar (Deepraj Rana). During a confrontation, Dibakar insults them as “refugees,” but Bikram and Bala assert their Indian identity before eliminating him.
With their newfound control over the coal trade, they expand into other ventures, laundering money with the help of Kaali Kaka (Saurabh Shukla). Despite their criminal activities, they become local heroes by funding hospitals, schools, and charitable causes, providing jobs for the underprivileged. However, their illegal dealings attract the attention of the law. Assistant Commissioner of Police Satyajeet Sarkar (Irrfan Khan) is tasked with bringing them to justice. Sarkar warns them that he will arrest them once he uncovers concrete evidence.
Their lives take another turn when they are invited to a club opening in Calcutta. There, they meet Nandita (Priyanka Chopra), a cabaret dancer, and Himanshu (Anant Vidhaat Sharma), the assistant of a businessman. As their criminal empire grows, so does the pressure from law enforcement, setting the stage for a dramatic confrontation.
