In a recent interview with India Today, Sharmila Tagore reflected on her career during the 70s and 80s, revealing that she occasionally signed films solely to cover her expenses. She explained, “As professionals, sometimes we take on projects for financial reasons, like paying rent. Other times, we support a colleague or a project that we believe can succeed with our involvement.” She emphasized that her decision to join *Gulmohar* was driven by her connection to the character Kusum, stating, “At this stage in my life, Kusum’s role was essential for me.”
Tagore also shared her perspective on portraying women in cinema, particularly older characters. She noted, “There’s a certain expectation of what a mother or sister-in-law should be like, but I wanted to break away from that stereotype. In *Gulmohar*, my character has layers, much like real life. Many women of my generation often put their own desires aside to support their families, but it’s important to realize that prioritizing oneself isn’t wrong.”
She expressed her newfound sense of freedom, saying, “As I’ve grown older and my children have settled into their own lives, I feel liberated from guilt. I’m finally able to explore new and meaningful roles without hesitation.”
Directed by Rahul Chittella, *Gulmohar* features an ensemble cast including Manoj Bajpayee and Suraj Sharma. The film is set to premiere on Disney+ Hotstar on March 3, 2023.
