**Storyline:**
The Grudge revolves around a curse that is born when someone dies in a state of extreme anger or sorrow. This curse manifests as a supernatural entity tied to the location of the death. Anyone who encounters this force meets a grim fate, causing the curse to regenerate and spread from one victim to another in an ever-expanding cycle of horror. The film presents these events in a nonlinear narrative, though the story unfolds chronologically.
In 2001, Kayako Saeki, a housewife in suburban Tokyo, becomes infatuated with college professor Peter Kirk, obsessively documenting her feelings in a diary. Her husband, Takeo, discovers the diary and, believing Kayako is having an affair, murders her, their son Toshio, and their cat in a fit of rage. After hiding their bodies in the house, Takeo is hanged by Kayako’s ghost. When Peter receives a letter from Kayako and visits the Saeki house, he finds the corpses of Kayako and Takeo, as well as Toshio’s ghost. Overwhelmed, Peter flees and commits suicide the next day. The Saeki family returns as vengeful spirits, with Kayako taking the form of an onryō (a wrathful ghost).
In 2004, the Williams family from America moves into the Saeki house. While Matt is enthusiastic about their new home, his wife Jennifer and his mother Emma, who suffers from dementia, feel uneasy. Matt and Jennifer soon fall victim to the curse. Yoko, a caregiver, arrives at the house to tend to Emma but encounters Kayako, who drags her into the attic. Concerned about Yoko’s disappearance, her employer Alex sends another caregiver, Karen Davis, to take over. Karen discovers Toshio trapped in a wardrobe and witnesses Kayako’s spirit descending from the ceiling to claim Emma.
The curse continues to thrive, perpetuating its cycle of terror as it claims new victims.
