Description: The term “ground zero” originated during the Trinity nuclear test in the Jornada del Muerto desert near Socorro, New Mexico, and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan. The United States Strategic Bombing Survey from June 1946 frequently used the term, defining it as the point directly beneath the detonation of a bomb. William Laurence, a reporter embedded with the Manhattan Project, noted that “Zero” was the code name for the Trinity test site in 1945.
The Oxford English Dictionary, referencing a 1946 New York Times article on Hiroshima, defines “ground zero” as the area immediately below an exploding bomb, particularly an atomic one. This term, initially military slang from the Trinity site, became widely used after World War II. In Hiroshima, the attack’s hypocenter was Shima Hospital, about 800 feet from the intended target, Aioi Bridge.
During the September 11, 2001 attacks, two planes hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists struck the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, leading to their collapse. The site of the destroyed towers quickly became known as “ground zero.” Rescue workers also referred to the site as “The Pile,” describing the massive rubble left after the buildings fell.
