Description: The 2022 Hulu original horror film “Grimcutty” falls short in both concept and execution, delivering a lackluster and occasionally cringe-worthy experience. Set in a small, affluent American town, the story revolves around a family of four who encounter strange events when an internet meme comes to life, targeting the local children and teenagers. The film is underwhelming and hard to recommend unless you are particularly fond of teen-centered horror.
One night, young Brandon discovers his mother has locked him in his room to prevent him from using phones or laptops before bed. While she scrolls through alarming news about the negative effects of social media and smartphone use on children, Brandon sneaks out through his window. Outside, he encounters a horrifying monster lurking near their house—a figure he seems to have seen before.
The monster breaks into the house, chasing Brandon with a sharp knife. In a desperate attempt to defend himself, Brandon grabs a knife from the kitchen and rushes into his mother’s room. As the monster closes in, Brandon accidentally stabs his mother.
Meanwhile, teenager Asha Chaudhry struggles with her unsuccessful YouTube channel, where she posts relaxation and ASMR videos, though the stress of maintaining it consumes her. Her family, including parents Amir and Leah and younger brother Kamran, dedicates one day a week to spending time together without electronic devices. During one such family outing to Kamran’s school concert, Amir learns about an eerie internet meme sensation called Grimcutty and its disturbing associated game.
