**Storyline:**
Billions of years ago, the Guardians of the Universe harnessed the green energy of willpower to establish an intergalactic police force known as the Green Lantern Corps. The universe was divided into 3,600 sectors, each protected by a Green Lantern. In Sector 2814, a Green Lantern named Abin Sur defeated a malignant entity called Parallax and imprisoned him on a deserted planet called Ryut. However, in modern times, Parallax escapes after gaining strength from the fear of survivors who accidentally stumbled upon his prison. Escaping, Parallax nearly kills Abin Sur, who crash-lands on Earth. Before dying, Abin Sur commands his power ring to find a worthy successor.
Hal Jordan, a confident test pilot at Ferris Aircraft, is chosen by the ring and transported to the crash site. There, Abin Sur appoints him as a Green Lantern, instructing him to take the lantern and recite the oath. Upon doing so, Hal is transported to Oa, the Green Lantern Corps’ home planet, where he trains with veteran members like Tomar-Re, Kilowog, and their leader, Sinestro. Sinestro doubts Hal’s abilities, leading to his decision to quit and return to Earth, keeping the power ring and lantern.
Meanwhile, scientist Hector Hammond is called by his father, Senator Robert Hammond, to a secret government facility to examine Abin Sur’s body. During the autopsy, a fragment of Parallax enters Hammond, granting him telepathic and telekinetic powers but driving him to madness.
