**Storyline:**
The movie follows the Space Shuttle *Explorer*, commanded by seasoned astronaut Matt Kowalski, during a mission to service the Hubble Space Telescope. Dr. Ryan Stone, a first-time astronaut, is onboard to conduct hardware upgrades. While on a spacewalk, Mission Control warns the crew of a rapidly spreading cloud of space debris caused by the destruction of a defunct Russian spy satellite. The crew is ordered to return to Earth immediately, but communication with Mission Control is lost as more satellites are destroyed by the debris.
The high-speed debris strikes the *Explorer* and Hubble, leaving Stone disoriented and drifting in space. Kowalski rescues her using a Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU), and they return to the shuttle, only to find it severely damaged and the rest of the crew dead. Deciding to use the MMU to reach the International Space Station (ISS), located 1,450 km away, they race against time as the debris field is expected to threaten them again in 90 minutes.
