**Storyline:**
By chance, three individuals find themselves near the grave of Thomas Godwin, which had been dug up by unknown vandals for unclear reasons. Intrigued by Mr. Godwin’s fascinating history, Feluda becomes determined to learn more about him. Through the diary of Thomas’ daughter, Charlotte, Feluda discovers that a valuable clock was buried alongside Thomas. Unexpectedly, he realizes that another group is aware of the clock’s existence and is attempting to retrieve it using a letter in their possession. With the detective’s sharp intellect and the assistance of Haripodobabu, Mr. Ganguli’s chauffeur—a new character introduced in this story—their plan is ultimately foiled.
The story is set in old Calcutta, which was once the capital of British India. Much like the Nawabs’ story in “Badshahi Angti” (set in Lucknow), the narrative highlights the lives of British families who resided in the former capital of the British Raj. Feluda visits a Christian cemetery to investigate the graves of the Godwin family members and travels to Ripon Lane to meet a surviving relative. He later uncovers an Anglo-Indian branch of the family, adding further depth to the mystery.
