**Plot Summary:**
Set in 1861, just before the American Civil War, the story follows Scarlett O’Hara, who lives on her family’s cotton plantation, Tara, in Georgia. Scarlett secretly loves Ashley Wilkes, but he is engaged to his cousin, Melanie Hamilton. At an engagement party at Ashley’s estate, Twelve Oaks, Scarlett confesses her feelings to Ashley but is rejected. During the event, she attracts the attention of Rhett Butler.
