**Storyline:**
In 1954, Godzilla, a prehistoric alpha predator, was lured to Bikini Atoll in an attempt to kill him using a nuclear bomb. Decades later, in 1999, Monarch scientists Ishiro Serizawa and Vivienne Graham investigate the skeleton of a monster resembling Godzilla, discovered in a cavern in the Philippines. They also find two giant spores—one dormant and one hatched—along with a trail leading to the sea. Meanwhile, in Japan, the Janjira Nuclear Power Plant experiences unusual seismic activity. Supervisor Joe Brody sends his wife, Sandra, to inspect the reactor, but a tremor causes the plant to collapse, trapping Sandra and her team inside.
Fifteen years later, Joe and Sandra’s son, Ford, a U.S. Navy EOD officer, returns home to his family in San Francisco but is called to Japan after Joe is detained for trespassing in the Janjira quarantine zone. Determined to uncover the truth behind the meltdown, Joe convinces Ford to help retrieve vital data from their old home. They discover the zone is uncontaminated and obtain the data, but they are captured and taken to a facility within the plant’s ruins. There, they find a massive chrysalis that has been feeding on the plant’s reactors for 15 years and emitting electromagnetic pulses. A giant winged insect-like creature emerges, destroys the facility, and escapes. Joe is severely injured and later dies. The incident is publicly reported as an earthquake.
Serizawa and Graham join a U.S. Navy task force led by Admiral William Stenz to hunt the creature, named a “MUTO” (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism). They reveal to Ford that Godzilla was awakened during a 1954 deep-sea expedition. Nuclear tests in the 1950s were attempts to kill him, and when that failed, Project Monarch was established to study Godzilla and similar creatures secretly.
