**Storyline:**
An iguana nest is exposed to the fallout of a military nuclear test in French Polynesia. In the South Pacific Ocean, a Japanese fishing vessel is suddenly attacked by a giant creature, leaving only one survivor. Dr. Niko “Nick” Tatopoulos, an NRC scientist, is researching the effects of radiation on wildlife in the Chernobyl exclusion zone when he is interrupted by a U.S. State Department official. In Tahiti, a mysterious Frenchman questions the traumatized survivor, who repeatedly mentions “Gojira.”
Nick is sent to Panama and Jamaica to investigate a trail of wreckage, including a recovered Japanese fishing ship with massive claw marks. He discovers skin samples from an unknown species and concludes that the creature is a mutant created by nuclear testing, dismissing the military’s theory that it is a living dinosaur.
The creature travels to New York City, causing widespread destruction. The city is evacuated as the U.S. military, following Nick’s advice, attempts to lure it with a large pile of fish. However, their plan fails, leading to more damage as the creature escapes. Nick collects a blood sample and, through a pregnancy test, discovers the creature reproduces asexually and is gathering food for its offspring.
During this time, Nick reconnects with his ex-girlfriend, Audrey Timmonds, an aspiring news reporter. She uncovers a classified tape in his military tent about the monster’s origins and leaks it to the media, hoping to advance her career. Instead, her boss, Charles Caiman, takes credit for the discovery and names the creature “Godzilla.”
As a result, Nick is removed from the operation and distances himself from Audrey. He is later kidnapped by the mysterious Frenchman, Philippe Roaché.
