Description: “Gods of Egypt” (2016) is a fantasy film set in an alternate version of ancient Egypt where gods and mortals coexist. The story begins with King Osiris being murdered by his envious brother Set during the coronation of Osiris’s son, Horus. Set usurps the throne and imposes a rule that humans must pay riches to enter the afterlife. After losing his eyes and being exiled, Horus watches as Egypt falls into chaos.
A year later, a thief named Bek receives plans for Set’s pyramid from his enslaved lover, Zaya. Bek steals one of Horus’s eyes from Set’s treasure vault but is captured by Urshu, resulting in Zaya’s death. Determined to revive her, Bek brings Zaya’s body to Horus and offers to retrieve the other eye if Horus can bring her back to life.
Their journey leads them to Ra, Horus’s grandfather and the sun god, who is preoccupied with battling the shadow beast Apophis. Although Ra doesn’t restore Horus’s full powers, he provides a vial of divine water to weaken Set. Ra hints that Horus’s loss of power stems from failing to fulfill his destiny, which Horus interprets as avenging his parents’ deaths.
Set attempts to enlist Hathor to guide him to the underworld, but she refuses and escapes. After surviving encounters with minotaurs, cobras, and other minions, Hathor aids Horus and Bek. Despite Horus’s mistrust, Hathor claims to oppose Set. The trio plans to infiltrate Set’s pyramid, with Hathor warning of a guardian sphinx. They seek Thoth’s help to solve the sphinx’s riddle and navigate the pyramid’s traps to reach the source of Set’s power.
However, Set outsmarts them, destroying the divine water and stealing Thoth’s brain. Horus manages to save Hathor and Bek, but Hathor sacrifices herself to ensure Bek’s passage to the afterlife with Zaya. She gives Bek her bracelet as payment and calls upon Anubis, allowing herself to be taken to the underworld.
