Raksha Bandhan, meaning “The Bond of Protection,” is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language family comedy-drama film directed by Aanand L. Rai and written by Himanshu Sharma and Kanika Dhillon. The movie features Akshay Kumar, Bhumi Pednekar, Sadia Khateeb, Sahejmeen Kaur, Smrithi Srikanth, and Deepika Khanna in prominent roles. Released theatrically on August 11, 2022, the film coincided with Raksha Bandhan and Independence Day celebrations.
The story revolves around Lala Kedarnath, the eldest and only brother of four sisters named Gayatri, Durga, Laxmi, and Saraswati. Lala runs a chat shop named Premlata Chat Bhandar, a business started by his grandfather. On his mother’s deathbed, Lala promises to prioritize his sisters’ marriages before considering his own. Despite his relentless efforts, he faces challenges in finding suitable grooms due to Laxmi’s dark complexion, Durga’s weight, and Saraswati’s masculine demeanor. These struggles also hinder his relationship with his childhood love, Sapna.
As the story progresses, Gayatri gets married. However, Lala later discovers that he is not their biological brother but was adopted by their mother. In his determination to arrange Durga and Laxmi’s weddings, Lala sells one of his kidneys to gather funds. Tragedy strikes when Gayatri, pressured by her in-laws for additional dowry, commits suicide without informing Lala. Heartbroken, Lala vows to empower his remaining sisters to make independent choices and reject the dowry system.
In a heartfelt decision, Lala cuts ties with Sapna, urging her to marry someone her father chooses. On Sapna’s wedding day, her father realizes her lingering love for Lala and encourages her to call off the marriage. Sapna decides to wait for Lala, leaving the future of their relationship open-ended.
