Description: Uttam, the son of a motorcycle mechanic, falls in love with Suchitra, the daughter of a quality control officer in the health department. Their relationship faces numerous challenges due to the disparity in their family backgrounds. Suchitra’s father imposes difficult tasks on Uttam to test his love and commitment. The central question remains: will Uttam succeed in overcoming these obstacles?
In an era where content quality often outweighs star power, *Girlfriend* (2018) feels disappointingly outdated. The film follows a predictable path: a boy loves a girl, her father disapproves due to social class differences, and challenges arise before a happy ending. Director Raja Chanda’s attempt to repackage this clichéd narrative fails to bring anything fresh to the table. The story feels all too familiar, leaving little room for emotional engagement.
Bonny Sengupta and Koushani Mukherjee, the lead actors, deliver their performances despite the limitations of the script. However, Bonny’s occasional overacting and Koushani’s limited dialogue further detract from the film’s appeal. The only redeeming aspects are the vibrant song sequences, which provide a temporary escape from the mundane plot. Jeet Gannguli’s music, particularly the title track, stands out as a highlight.
Overall, *Girlfriend* is a letdown, even with its nostalgic use of the names Uttam and Suchitra. It feels like a relic of the past, struggling to find relevance in today’s digital age. The film’s formulaic approach and lack of originality make it a forgettable experience.
