Description: The film “Girl in the Basement” from 2021 begins with Don urgently taking someone to the hospital. Later, the family is seen dining together. Don and his wife Irene are parents to two daughters, Amy and Sara. Sara, the rebellious one, sneaks out to attend a bonfire dance with her boyfriend Michael, who rides a motorcycle and plays the guitar. Michael serenades Sara with a song, expressing his love for her in a tender moment.
The next morning, upon Sara’s return, Don is furious and yells at her, asserting that she must abide by his rules while living under his roof. Sara discusses plans with Amy and Irene to move out on her own. Overhearing this, Don prepares his basement bomb shelter, intending to trap Sara there to prevent her from leaving.
When Irene goes shopping, Don requests Sara’s assistance to move items in the basement. He then locks her in the soundproofed bomb shelter, leaving her with no means of escape. The room is equipped with basic supplies, including a bin full of clothing. A day counter marks the beginning of Sara’s prolonged captivity.
Inside the shelter, Sara is confined like a captive animal. The shelter’s keypad allows only three attempts before disabling air circulation. She uses pots as toilets and seizes every chance to scream for help and resist her imprisonment. Don justifies his actions as punishment for her behavior and proceeds to commit an unspeakable act by raping his own daughter, claiming it’s a form of discipline. This horrifying revelation underscores the horrific reality of Sara’s plight.
Meanwhile, Irene believes her daughter has run away and alerts the police. Don and Irene speak with the authorities, who dismiss the case, assuming Sara is a typical runaway. Given her age of eighteen, there is little the police can do to intervene.
