Description: “Girl in Golden Gate Park,” a 2021 independent neo-noir film, was written and directed by JP Allen and produced by his partner, Cathy Montosa. The movie beautifully captures the essence of San Francisco while unraveling a mysterious story that reflects the harsh realities of life in the city today. Much like the 2019 film “The Last Black Man in San Francisco,” this movie focuses on characters living on the margins, despite growing up in a diverse and accepting city where they once felt a sense of belonging.

The story revolves around three strong and resilient women. One is thriving, while the other two are struggling to survive. Jean, portrayed by Kim Jiang-Dubaniewicz, is introduced living in her car near Golden Gate Park. She devises a plan to rebuild her life, which includes seeking revenge for the mistreatment of her ailing father and the events that led to their eviction. Montosa shared that the film is partly inspired by friends who faced eviction, making it a poignant exploration of the concept of home.

Montosa, who grew up in Winters, California, and spent much of her nursing career in Santa Rosa, met Allen at a screening of his 2011 film, “Centaur.” The couple has been together for over nine years, married for six, and now resides in the Inner Sunset. Their home, overlooking Golden Gate Park, served as one of the film’s shooting locations.

The movie extensively features Golden Gate Park, with scenes shot at Stow Lake, the Polo Fields, and the de Young Museum. Early morning nature shots and moments of tai chi practice add depth to the narrative, making the park feel like a fourth central character in the story.
