Description: In Pinellas County, Florida, seven-year-old Mary Adler lives with her uncle and guardian, Frank. She bonds with her 43-year-old neighbor, Roberta, and impresses her teacher, Bonnie Stevenson, with her exceptional mathematical talent on her first day of school. Despite her initial disinterest in her classmates and their activities, Mary begins to connect with them during show-and-tell when she brings her one-eyed cat, Fred. Later, she stands up for a classmate by confronting a bully on the school bus.
Following the incident, the principal suggests enrolling Mary in a private school for gifted children, offering a scholarship. Frank declines, fearing it would deprive Mary of a normal childhood, based on his family’s past experiences with such schools.
Mary’s mother, Diane, was a talented mathematician focused on solving the Navier-Stokes problem, one of the unsolved Millennium Prize Problems, before she tragically took her own life when Mary was six
