**Storyline:**
Physicists Abby Yates and Erin Gilbert co-authored a research book exploring the existence of paranormal phenomena, including ghosts. While Abby continued her studies at a technical college alongside eccentric engineer Jillian Holtzmann, Erin distanced herself from the work, fearing it could harm her tenure at Columbia University. When Abby republished the book, Erin persuaded her to stop its distribution in exchange for assisting in a paranormal investigation. During the investigation, they encountered a malevolent ghost, reigniting Erin’s belief in the supernatural. However, footage of the encounter surfaced online, leading to Erin’s dismissal from the university.
Undeterred, Erin joined Abby and Jillian, setting up an office above a Chinese restaurant and calling themselves “Conductors of the Metaphysical Examination.” They developed equipment to study and capture ghosts, hiring the charming but clueless Kevin Beckman as their receptionist.
Meanwhile, MTA employee Patty Tolan witnessed a ghost in a subway line and contacted the group. Their documentation of the encounter and successful testing of Jillian’s proton containment laser were met with skepticism. Despite this, they continued refining their technology and adopted the name the media had given them: “Ghostbusters.” Patty joined the team, contributing her knowledge of New York City’s history and a repurposed hearse named “Ecto-1.”
Unbeknownst to the Ghostbusters, the ghost sightings were orchestrated by Rowan North, an occultist aiming to trigger the apocalypse. When the Ghostbusters captured a ghost during a live music event, supernatural debunker Dr. Martin Heiss challenged their credibility. In response, Erin released the ghost as proof, but it escaped, throwing Heiss out of a window.
The Ghostbusters now face the daunting task of stopping Rowan’s plan and saving the city from supernatural chaos.
