As supernatural activity surges across New York City, the Ghostbusters rise to fame, prompting them to hire Winston Zeddemore to manage the increasing demand. However, their operation draws suspicion from Environmental Protection Agency inspector Walter Peck, who attempts to evaluate their equipment but is turned away by Venkman. Egon later warns that their ghost containment unit is nearing capacity, and alarming spikes in psychokinetic energy suggest the city has become a supernatural hotspot.
Venkman learns that Zuul is a demigod serving Gozer the Gozerian, a shape-shifting god of destruction. Upon returning home, Dana is possessed by Zuul, who identifies herself as “the Gatekeeper.” Similarly, her neighbor Louis Tully is possessed by Vinz Clortho, known as “the Keymaster.” The Ghostbusters decide to keep the two separated to prevent an impending apocalyptic event.
