**Storyline:**
In a near-future world, humans are enhanced with cybernetic upgrades that improve traits like vision, strength, and intelligence. Hanka Robotics, a leading augmentation developer, initiates a secret project to create an artificial body, or “shell,” capable of hosting a human brain instead of artificial intelligence. Mira Killian, the only survivor of a devastating cyberterrorist attack that claimed her parents’ lives, becomes the test subject after her body is irreparably damaged. Despite objections from her designer, Dr. Ouelet, Hanka Robotics CEO Cutter decides to use Killian as a counter-terrorism operative.
A year later, Killian holds the rank of Major in the counter-terrorism unit Section 9, working alongside operatives Batou and Togusa under Chief Daisuke Aramaki. Struggling with fragmented memories of her past and unsettling hallucinations—dismissed by Ouelet as glitches—Killian grapples with her identity. When the team prevents a terrorist attack at a Hanka business conference, Killian destroys a hacked robotic geisha after it kills a hostage. Discovering that the geisha was manipulated by an unknown entity named Kuze, Killian violates protocol to dive into its AI for answers. A counter-hack attempt forces Batou to disconnect her, but they trace the hacker to a yakuza nightclub, where they fall into a trap. The resulting explosion severely damages Batou’s eyes and Killian’s body. Cutter, furious at Killian’s actions, threatens to disband Section 9 unless Aramaki keeps her in check.
Kuze kills Dr. Dahlin, a Hanka consultant linked to Section 9, and the team uncovers a pattern of murders targeting senior Hanka researchers. Realizing Ouelet is next, they prepare to protect her. Kuze hijacks two sanitation workers, sending them to assassinate Ouelet. With his newly enhanced cybernetic eyes, Batou kills one attacker while Killian subdues the other. During interrogation, Kuze speaks through the worker before compelling him to end his own life.
