Description: In 2029, cybernetic technology has advanced to the point where the human body can be enhanced or entirely replaced with mechanical components. A significant development is the cyberbrain, a device that houses the human brain and provides access to the Internet and other networks. The term “ghost” is often used to describe the consciousness residing within the body, or the “shell.” Major Motoko Kusanagi leads an assault team for Public Security Section 9 in “New Port City,” Japan.
At the request of Nakamura, the head of Section 6, Kusanagi successfully assassinates a foreign diplomat to prevent a programmer named Daita from defecting. The interpreter for the Foreign Minister is later ghost-hacked, seemingly to target VIPs during an upcoming meeting. Suspecting the elusive Puppet Master is behind this, Kusanagi’s team traces the virus to its source.
Their investigation leads them to capture a garbage man and a thug, both of whom are ghost-hacked individuals with no knowledge of the Puppet Master. The case hits another dead end until Megatech Body, a suspected government-linked manufacturer of “shells,” is hacked. A cybernetic body created by the manufacturer escapes but is struck by a truck.
When Section 9 examines the body, they discover a human “ghost” within its computer brain. Nakamura from Section 6 arrives to claim the body, asserting that the “ghost” is the Puppet Master, lured into the body by his team. The body reactivates, declares itself a sentient being, and requests political asylum.
After a philosophical debate about what defines humanity, a disguised agent accompanying Nakamura creates a distraction and escapes with the body. Prepared for deception, Kusanagi’s team immediately pursues the agent.
