Description: Black photographer Chris Washington feels uneasy as he prepares to meet the family of his white girlfriend, Rose Armitage. Upon arriving at the Armitage family home in rural Upstate New York, Chris encounters unsettling remarks from Rose’s family—her brother Jeremy and parents, Dean, a neurosurgeon, and Missy, a hypnotherapist—about Black individuals. Chris also observes odd behavior from the estate’s Black housekeeper, Georgina, and groundskeeper, Walter.
When Chris struggles to sleep, Missy convinces him to undergo a hypnotherapy session to help him quit smoking. During the session, Chris relives the guilt of his mother’s death in a hit-and-run accident during his childhood and slips into what Missy calls the “Sunken Place.” The next day, Chris dismisses the experience as a dream until Walter confirms their encounter from the previous night. Later, Georgina accidentally unplugs Chris’s phone, draining its battery.
The Armitages host their annual gathering, attended by wealthy white guests who express fascination with Chris’s physique and Black celebrities like Tiger Woods. A blind art dealer, Jim Hudson, shows particular interest in Chris’s photography. Chris meets another Black man, Logan King, who behaves erratically and is married to an older white woman.
Concerned, Chris contacts his friend Rod Williams, a TSA officer, about the strange occurrences. When Chris secretly photographs Logan, the flash causes Logan to become hysterical, shouting at Chris to “get out.” The others restrain Logan, and Dean claims he had a seizure.
Chris decides it’s time to leave and convinces Rose to go with him. Meanwhile, Dean auctions a photo of Chris, which Hudson wins. Rod identifies “Logan” as Andre Hayworth, a missing person, and suspects a conspiracy. Despite seeking police help, Rod is dismissed.
As Chris packs, he discovers photos of Rose with other Black individuals, including Walter and Georgina, contradicting her claim that Chris is her first Black boyfriend. The situation grows increasingly ominous, leading Chris to question the true intentions of those around him.
