Description: Rajkumar Santoshi is returning to direction after a decade, following the release of *Phata Poster Nikla Hero*, which did not perform as well as *Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahaani*. His latest film is expected to cater to a niche audience, especially as it coincides with Shah Rukh Khan’s highly anticipated comeback movie, *Pathaan*. Santoshi’s project explores a unique narrative that reimagines history by bringing together Mahatma Gandhi and his assassin, Nathuram Godse, in a scenario where Gandhi survives and forgives Godse. The two engage in an ideological battle, aiming to understand each other’s perspectives better in a story that delves into themes of unity, peace, and differing interpretations of identity and nationalism.
In the film, Gandhi is portrayed as a figure advocating for unity and peace, while Godse represents a vision of an “akhand Hindu rashtra,” believing that a particular community is disrupting the nation’s harmony. Godse criticizes Gandhi’s approach, blaming him for India’s perceived concessions to Pakistan, including the payment of Rs 55 crore. Both characters follow the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, but their interpretations place them on opposite ends of the ideological spectrum.
Santoshi’s experience allows him to navigate this sensitive subject carefully, avoiding controversy while presenting both ideologies without bias. The film avoids labeling Gandhi as a saint or Godse as a villain, instead humanizing both characters with their respective virtues and flaws. However, the narrative’s oversimplification risks making the film feel preachy and bland, detracting from its potential depth. Ultimately, the story focuses on mutual understanding rather than declaring a winner in their ideological clash.
