Description: The 2009 film *Gamer* is set in the year 2034 and follows the story of Ken Castle, a computer programmer who creates self-replicating nanites. These nanites replace brain tissue, enabling humans to control other people’s actions and see through their eyes. Castle’s invention, known as “Nanex,” is first used in a virtual life simulation game called *Society*, where players manipulate live actors as avatars. The game becomes a global phenomenon, making Castle the wealthiest man in the world. He then launches *Slayers*, a first-person shooter game where death-row prisoners use real weapons in specially designed arenas. Participants volunteer with the promise of freedom if they survive 30 matches, though no one has achieved this yet.
John “Kable” Tillman, a crowd favorite, has survived a record 27 matches, controlled by Simon, a talented 17-year-old gamer. Meanwhile, an activist group called “Humanz” hacks a talk show to warn that Castle’s technology could be used to control people against their will. They also disrupt *Society*, but Castle dismisses their efforts as insignificant. However, Castle feels threatened by Kable’s success and introduces Hackman, a new inmate, into *Slayers* with the sole purpose of killing Kable. Unlike other players, Hackman won’t be controlled by a gamer, giving him an advantage.
Kable’s wife, Angie, works as a *Society* character but is denied custody of their daughter, Delia, who lives with a wealthy family. The Humanz contact both Kable and Simon, revealing Castle’s plan to eliminate Kable. They offer to create a mod to help Kable escape, but only if Simon relinquishes control during the game.
