Description: The plot revolves around the legendary tale of Evpaty Kolovrat, a warrior documented in the 16th-century story of Ryazan’s destruction. The narrative begins with a young Evpaty being defeated by a Mongol group after the Battle of the Kalka River in 1223 and left to perish. His wife, Nastya, later gives him the nickname “Kolovrat,” meaning “spinning wheel,” due to his unique fighting style of wielding two swords in a circular motion.
In the year 1236, Evpaty serves as a knight under Prince Yuri of Ryazan. When Batu Khan, Genghis Khan’s grandson, leads the Mongol army toward Ryazan in 1237, Prince Fedor, along with Evpaty and other envoys, attempts to negotiate peace with the Khan. Impressed by Evpaty’s bravery, Batu Khan grants him a talisman ensuring safe passage through Mongol territory. However, the Mongols betray the envoys, killing Prince Fedor. Evpaty and a few soldiers manage to escape, only to find Ryazan already destroyed by the Mongol horde.
Determined to protect his people, Evpaty assembles a small force to delay the Mongol advance, hoping for aid from neighboring Russian princes, which never arrives. He assigns one of his soldiers, Karkun, to escort the surviving women and children to safety. In a final stand at a fortified hilltop, Evpaty and his men valiantly defend their position. Despite killing the Mongol commander Khostovrul, all defenders are ultimately slain. Mortally wounded, Evpaty sees a sail on the river, signaling that Karkun and the survivors have escaped thanks to their sacrifice.
Before his death, Evpaty returns the talisman to Batu Khan, declaring he no longer needs it. Moved by his bravery, Batu Khan orders a hero’s burial for Evpaty, honoring his remarkable defense and sacrifice.
