**Storyline:**
During the United States’ involvement in the Vietnam War, a group of recruits arrives at Parris Island. The relentless drill instructor, Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, uses brutal methods to transform the recruits into combat-ready Marines. Among the recruits is Leonard Lawrence, an overweight and slow-witted individual whom Hartman nicknames “Gomer Pyle.” Another recruit, J.T. Davis, earns the nickname “Joker” after mimicking John Wayne during Hartman’s speech.
When Pyle struggles during basic training, Hartman assigns Joker to mentor him. While Pyle shows improvement under Joker’s guidance, Hartman discovers a contraband jelly doughnut in Pyle’s footlocker. Blaming the platoon for Pyle’s mistakes, Hartman enforces collective punishment—the entire platoon, except for Pyle, suffers for his errors. One night, the recruits haze Pyle in a blanket party, with Joker reluctantly participating. Afterward, Pyle transforms into a model recruit, excelling in marksmanship. However, Joker grows concerned when he notices Pyle speaking to his rifle, fearing a mental breakdown.
After graduation, the recruits receive their Military Occupational Specialty assignments. Joker is assigned to military journalism, while most others, including Pyle, are sent to the Infantry. On their final night at Parris Island, Joker discovers Pyle in the bathroom, loading his rifle and reciting the Rifleman’s Creed. When Hartman confronts Pyle and demands he surrender the weapon, Pyle shoots Hartman dead and then takes his own life, leaving Joker in shock.
In January 1968, Joker, now a sergeant, works as a war correspondent in Da Nang for *Stars and Stripes*, alongside Private First Class Rafterman, a combat photographer. Rafterman is eager to experience combat, while Joker faces mockery at the Marine base for lacking the “thousand-yard stare,” a sign of his limited battlefield experience.
