It originated from the same root as words related to pain, such as fibromyalgia and analgesic. It was not the same as reminiscing with old friends or sharing amusing stories about your children’s upbringing. And it certainly wasn’t comparable to a clip show.
The delayed *Friends* reunion special, now available on HBO Max after a year of COVID-related postponements, humorously teases the emotionally gratifying essence of nostalgia. Six iconic actors—Courteney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry, and David Schwimmer—return to discuss the show that catapulted them to stardom between 1994 and 2004. Their paths since then have diverged significantly.
Approaching this reunion with a hint of cynicism is almost obligatory. Despite the heartfelt hugs and tears, *The Hollywood Reporter* revealed that each actor earned a staggering $2.5 to $3 million for participating in the special. While the financial incentive may have played a role, the cast shared in the special that they hadn’t all been in the same room together—aside from one unspecified occasion—since the show ended.
