Description: In 1922, Frida Kahlo experiences a life-altering accident at the age of 18 when the wooden bus she is on collides with a streetcar. The incident leaves her impaled by a metal pole, causing injuries that affect her throughout her life. During her recovery, her father provides her with a canvas to paint, sparking her artistic journey.
After regaining her ability to walk with the aid of a cane, Frida approaches muralist Diego Rivera, demanding he evaluate her artwork. Rivera is captivated by her talent, and their relationship begins, marked by complexity and dysfunction. Despite their marriage, both engage in numerous affairs—Rivera with various women, and Kahlo with both men and women, even sharing a lover with Rivera at one point.
In 1934, the couple travels to New York City as Rivera is commissioned to paint the mural *Man at the Crossroads* at Rockefeller Center. While in the U.S., Kahlo suffers a miscarriage and returns to Mexico for her mother’s funeral. Rivera’s refusal to compromise his communist ideals for the mural leads to its destruction, prompting their return to Mexico, with Rivera being the more reluctant of the two.
Kahlo’s sister, Cristina, moves into their San Ángel studio to assist Rivera, only for Kahlo to discover their affair. Heartbroken, she leaves him and spirals into alcoholism after returning to her family home in Coyoacán. The couple later reunites during a Día de los Muertos celebration, where Rivera asks Kahlo to host Leon Trotsky, who has been granted asylum in Mexico. Over time, Kahlo and Trotsky develop a romantic relationship, which eventually forces Trotsky and his wife to leave Kahlo’s home.
