Description: In the 2003 film *Freaky Friday*, teenage musician Anna Coleman lives with her widowed mother, Tess, a therapist, and her younger brother, Harry. Tess is engaged to Ryan, but Anna struggles to accept him due to lingering grief over her father’s death three years prior. At school, Anna faces unfair treatment from her English teacher, Mr. Bates, who consistently gives her failing grades regardless of her efforts. She also deals with hostility from her former best friend, Stacey, and harbors a crush on Jake, whom her mother disapproves of. Anna’s band, Pink Slip, is set to audition for *Wango Tango* at the *House of Blues*, but this conflicts with her mother’s wedding rehearsal, leading to a heated argument during a dinner at a Chinese restaurant.
Their fight is interrupted by the restaurant owner’s mother, who gives them fortune cookies. After reading their fortunes, an inexplicable earthquake occurs, which only they experience. The next morning, Anna and Tess wake up in each other’s bodies. Tess, now in Anna’s body, goes to school and gains insight into her daughter’s struggles. She confronts Mr. Bates, realizing he unfairly targets Anna out of resentment for a past rejection. Meanwhile, Anna, in Tess’s body, struggles to manage her mother’s therapy clients despite giving herself a makeover.
Desperate to reverse the switch, they return to the restaurant, where they learn that only by demonstrating selfless love for each other will they return to their own bodies. The film explores themes of understanding and empathy as they navigate their swapped lives and work to mend their relationship.
