Description: Frances Ha (2012) tells the story of Frances Halladay, a 27-year-old aspiring dancer living in New York City with her close college friend, Sophie. Their lives take a turn when Sophie decides to move from Brooklyn to her dream neighborhood, Tribeca. Frances, unable to afford the move, is forced to find a new place to live. She temporarily stays with friends, Lev and Benji, in Chinatown while navigating the growing distance in her bond with Sophie, who is growing closer to her boyfriend, Patch. When Frances learns she won’t be needed for the Christmas show at her dance company, she can no longer afford her apartment and spends the holidays in her hometown, Sacramento, reconnecting with family and old friends.
After the holidays, fellow dancer Rachel offers Frances a place to stay. During a dinner with Rachel’s family, Frances discovers that Sophie has quit her job and is moving to Tokyo with Patch. On impulse, Frances uses her credit card to fund a short, uneventful trip to Paris. Upon returning, she takes up a job as a waitress and resident assistant at her alma mater, Vassar. Overworked and unable to take classes, she follows Sophie’s life in Tokyo through her blog.
One night, while working an alumni event, Frances encounters Sophie and Patch, who are now engaged. After witnessing a fight between the couple, Frances lets a drunk Sophie stay in her dorm room. Sophie confides in Frances about her miscarriage in Japan and her unhappiness in her relationship. The next morning, Sophie leaves for New York, leaving a note for Frances. Eventually, Frances returns to Manhattan but struggles with her financial instability, limited dance opportunities, and the strained relationship with Sophie.
