Description: Theodore “Ted” Crawford, a wealthy Irish aeronautical engineer residing in Los Angeles, discovers that his wife, Jennifer, is having an affair with police detective Robert Nunally. After confronting her, Crawford shoots Jennifer. When the police arrive, including Nunally, tensions rise as Crawford goads Nunally into a confrontation, leading Nunally to assault him.
While in jail awaiting trial, Crawford engages in a psychological battle with deputy district attorney William “Willy” Beachum, who sees the case as straightforward and agrees to a swift trial. Beachum, who is transitioning to a corporate law firm, also flirts with his future boss, Nikki Gardner.
During the trial, Crawford represents himself, pitting an untrained individual against a seasoned prosecutor. He reveals that Nunally had an affair with his wife and assaulted him, rendering his confession inadmissible. Beachum also discovers that Crawford’s gun could not have been used in the crime, complicating the case.
Desperate, Nunally suggests planting evidence, which Beachum refuses. With no new evidence, Beachum loses the case, and Crawford is acquitted. Shamed, Nunally takes his own life outside the courtroom.
Beachum’s career with the prestigious law firm is ruined, but he finds new purpose in his role as a prosecutor, committed to seeking justice for victims like Jennifer. Crawford mockingly notes that Beachum has “found God.”
