Description: In 1987, Olympic wrestling champion Mark Schultz gives a speech at an elementary school on behalf of his older brother, Dave. Both brothers are 1984 Olympic gold medalists, but Mark feels overshadowed by Dave. Soon, Mark is contacted by John E. du Pont, a wealthy philanthropist and wrestling enthusiast, who invites him to train at his private wrestling facility on his Pennsylvania estate. John offers Mark a spot on his wrestling team, Team Foxcatcher, with financial support to prepare for the World Championship. Mark accepts the invitation and moves to Pennsylvania alone, as Dave declines the offer to stay with his wife and children in their current home.
Mark settles into a guest house on the estate and begins training with his new teammates. With John’s backing, Mark excels and wins a gold medal at the 1987 World Wrestling Championships. The two develop a close friendship, and John introduces Mark to cocaine, which he begins using regularly. John confides in Mark, sharing personal stories, such as how his mother, Jean du Pont, once paid a boy to be his friend. John also organizes and funds a wrestling tournament for participants over 50, rigging the final match to ensure his victory.
However, John’s relationship with his mother remains strained, as she disapproves of wrestling, calling it a “low sport.” One day, Mark and his teammates skip training to watch mixed martial arts on TV, angering John. He slaps Mark and demands he reconcile with his brother, Dave, while insisting that Dave will join Team Foxcatcher. Eventually, Dave relents and moves his family to Pennsylvania to join the team.
