Description: Is there such a thing as fate or true love? Or are we all merely wandering through life, hoping to find someone compatible to share our journey? These profound questions are explored in the 2022 Italian film *Four to Dinner*, though it’s not the first to tackle this theme. In the 1990s, *Sliding Doors* offered a charming take on the concept, focusing on how a single moment can lead to two entirely different timelines. In that story, the protagonist’s life diverges based on whether she catches a train or misses it, eventually leading to a predictable, albeit endearing, conclusion.
Similarly, *Four to Dinner* explores the “what if” scenario but extends it to four individuals: Matteo, Dario, Chiara, and Giulia. Over the course of 100 minutes, the film examines various pairings and their outcomes, presenting a range of romantic possibilities. While the idea of opposites attracting, perfect dates, betrayals, pregnancies, weddings, and emotional confessions is familiar rom-com territory, the film adds intrigue by showing how different couples navigate these moments.
However, the film misses an opportunity by not including same-sex pairings. Despite impressive editing, the screenplay feels a bit disjointed. Ultimately, the allure lies in discovering which pairings endure and which fall apart, making *Four to Dinner* a thought-provoking, if imperfect, exploration of love and destiny.
