Description: Four Lions (2010) is a dark comedy film that follows a group of radicalized young British Muslim men aspiring to become suicide bombers. The group includes Omar (Riz Ahmed), who is highly critical of Western society and interventionism; his dim-witted cousin Waj (Kayvan Novak); Barry (Nigel Lindsay), an impulsive English convert to Islam; and Faisal (Adeel Akhtar), who experiments with training crows to be used in attacks. Omar and Waj travel to an al Qaeda-affiliated training camp in Pakistan, but their trip ends in chaos when Omar accidentally destroys part of the camp while trying to shoot down an American drone.
Back in the UK, the group struggles to agree on a target for their attack. Barry proposes bombing a local mosque to provoke a reaction, while Faisal suggests targeting a pharmacy for selling contraceptives and tampons. Omar’s brother, who is conservative but nonviolent, tries to dissuade him, but Omar mocks him and drives him away.
As the group prepares their explosives, Hassan (Arsher Ali) is left to guard their safe house. Meanwhile, Barry takes Waj and Faisal to test a small amount of explosives, using a fireworks display as cover. Upon returning, they find Hassan dancing with a neighbor, raising suspicions of being compromised. While transporting the explosives to a new location, Faisal accidentally detonates them, resulting in his death. This incident alerts the authorities and causes tension within the group.
The film blends humor and satire to explore themes of extremism, identity, and absurdity.
