Description: Professor Philip Brainard, a scientist at Medfield College, is determined to create a new energy source to generate funds and save the college from shutting down. His obsession with his research causes him to neglect his fiancée, Sara Jean Reynolds, who serves as the college president. Due to his experiments, he has already missed two wedding dates, leaving Sara frustrated. The story takes a turn on the day of their third attempt to marry, when Brainard’s former partner, Wilson Croft, approaches him. Croft, who has profited from Brainard’s stolen ideas, now aims to win Sara’s affection. Brainard dismisses Croft’s intentions as a joke but ends up missing the wedding yet again when his experiment unexpectedly progresses.
The experiment results in the creation of a sentient green substance with extraordinary elasticity and kinetic energy. This material, nicknamed “Flubber” by Brainard’s robot assistant, Weebo, proves difficult to control and causes chaos in the neighborhood before Brainard manages to contain it. Despite the challenges, Brainard continues to work on stabilizing Flubber’s movement throughout the night. However, his efforts cause him to overlook his wedding once more, leading to further tension with Sara.
Meanwhile, Chester Hoenicker, a sponsor of Medfield College, becomes upset after Brainard fails his son, Bennett, in chemistry. In response, Hoenicker sends his security team to Brainard’s home to pressure him into improving Bennett’s grade. The story unfolds as Brainard navigates the consequences of his groundbreaking discovery while trying to mend his relationship with Sara.
