**Storyline:**
The film follows three U.S. servicemen—Marine Private First Class Ira Hayes, Private First Class Rene Gagnon, and Navy Pharmacist’s Mate 2nd Class John “Doc” Bradley—who are celebrated as heroes during a war bond drive. Through flashbacks, they reflect on their harrowing experiences during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II.
After training at Camp Tarawa in Hawaii, the 28th Marine Regiment of the 5th Marine Division prepares to invade Iwo Jima. The Navy bombards suspected Japanese positions for three days before the assault. Sergeant Mike Strank takes command of Second Platoon.
On February 19, 1945, the Marines land on the beaches using Higgins boats and LVTs. Initially met with silence, they soon face devastating fire from Japanese artillery and machine guns. Despite heavy casualties, the Marines secure the beaches.
Two days later, they launch an attack on Mount Suribachi under intense enemy fire. Doc saves multiple lives under fire, earning him the Navy Cross. The mountain is eventually secured, and on February 23, Sergeant Hank Hansen’s platoon reaches the summit. They raise the United States flag, sparking cheers from the beaches and ships below.
Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal, witnessing the event, requests the flag as a memento. Colonel Chandler Johnson decides his 2nd Battalion deserves the flag more, so Rene and others are sent to replace it with a second flag. During this process, Mike, Doc, Ira, Rene, and two other Marines are photographed by Joe Rosenthal raising the second flag, creating one of the most iconic images of the war.
