Description: “Five Feet Apart” is a 2019 film that tells the story of Stella Grant, a cystic fibrosis patient who uses social media to manage her illness and strives to live a normal life. During her stay in the hospital, she meets Will Newman, another CF patient participating in a medication trial to eliminate a bacterial infection (B. cepacia) in his lungs.
CF patients must maintain a distance of six feet to avoid cross-infection, as contracting infections from others with CF can be extremely dangerous, even fatal. Stella is committed to following these rules and initially clashes with Will, who tends to disregard guidelines and take risks. Over time, Stella convinces Will to adhere to his treatment plan.
As their connection deepens, Stella and Will develop feelings for each other. They secretly go on their first date, staying five feet apart, with Stella explaining that she’s “taking that foot for us.” Their relationship grows, and they end up at the hospital pool, where they share their surgical scars. On Will’s birthday, Stella throws him a surprise dinner party with the help of Poe, her best friend and fellow CF patient.
Tragedy strikes when Poe passes away, leaving Stella heartbroken. She initially distances herself from Will, but eventually decides to embrace life in honor of Poe. She and Will venture out to see the city lights, ending up on a frozen pond, dancing freely. Meanwhile, back at the hospital, a critically injured girl’s lungs are found to be a match for Stella. The nurse rushes to notify Stella, only to discover she’s not in her room.
