**Storyline:**
Mia Williams, a troubled and lonely 15-year-old girl, lives on an East London council estate with her single mother, Joanne, and her younger sister, Tyler. Mia’s relationship with her best friend, Keely, has recently ended, and she struggles to get along with her sister and her verbally abusive mother. She often acts out physically, provoking Keely’s friends. Mia finds solace in hip-hop dancing, practicing alone in an abandoned flat in her building, usually after drinking alcoholic cider.
One day, while exploring, Mia encounters a tethered horse at a Traveller encampment. She attempts to free it but is chased by the horse’s owners. Among them, Billy is less hostile toward her. Mia’s life takes a turn when her mother’s new boyfriend, Conor, enters the picture. Charming and handsome, Conor takes an interest in Mia’s dancing and invites her and Tyler on a countryside trip. He shares his favorite song, Bobby Womack’s version of “California Dreamin’,” and teaches Mia how to catch fish with her bare hands. Despite Mia’s initial coldness, she begins to seek Conor’s attention.
At an internet café, Mia takes a poster advertising erotic dancing auditions. While there, Keely’s friends confront and physically assault her. Later, Mia helps Billy steal a car engine part from a junkyard, and their interaction hints at flirtation. Mia visits Conor at his workplace, where he encourages her to audition for the dancing gig and lends her a video camera to record her performance. Their relationship becomes increasingly flirtatious.
When a social worker visits Joanne to discuss Mia’s behavior and suggests a boarding unit for troubled teens, Mia runs away. Upon returning, Conor playfully spanks her, but Mia grows jealous and angry when she overhears Conor and her mother being intimate.
