Description: Firangi (2017) is a film set in the 1920s, following the story of Mangatram, nicknamed “Manga,” an uneducated and unemployed young man who dreams of joining the Police Force. Despite repeated attempts, he fails to achieve his goal. During a trip to the village of Naku Guda for his friend Heera’s wedding, Manga meets Sargi and falls in love with her. However, his lack of a job becomes a barrier to pursuing a relationship with her.
Manga possesses a unique ability: he can cure anyone’s back pain with a simple kick to their backside. One day, he uses this skill to heal Mark Daniel, an Englishman, who is so impressed that he offers Manga a job in the Police Force. Overjoyed, Manga believes this newfound employment will remove any objections from Sargi’s family regarding their marriage. However, Sargi’s grandfather, Lalaji, a follower of Mahatma Gandhi, refuses the proposal because Manga is now working for the British—the very oppressors the villagers are fighting against for their freedom.
In his second film, Kapil Sharma ventures into a new genre, stepping away from his comedic roots. While this bold move shows his desire to explore diverse roles, it raises questions about whether his fans are ready for this shift and if he can convincingly portray a serious character. Unfortunately, his performance often feels flat, with a lack of expression throughout the film. His robotic romance with Ishita Dutta, who resembles Amrita Rao, feels forced and fails to engage the audience. Additionally, the film’s lengthy runtime adds to its drawbacks, making it a challenging watch.
