The story follows Irfan Ahmed, an IIT Madras gold medalist living in Chennai with his constable mother, Praveena Begum, and his friends. Irfan is in a relationship with Archana Krishnamoorthy, who is pursuing her Ph.D. in Delhi, and befriends a junior lawyer, Prathana Raman. Struggling to secure a job due to questions about his religious beliefs, Irfan works part-time at a perfume factory. He later joins a full-time perfume business led by Perumal and his son Karthikeyan, traveling across India to source chemicals.
During a trip back from Hyderabad, Irfan loses his phone and, in frustration, threatens airport officials, claiming he will bomb Hyderabad. This leads to his arrest, but he is eventually released and returns to Chennai. When the same phone is discovered at a blast site in Hyderabad, Irfan is arrested again and detained by NIA advisor Ajay Dewan. He is interrogated by NIA officer Anisha Qureshi and police officer Gunashekhar, who accuse him of being the notorious terrorist Abu Bakr Abdullah.
Branded as a terrorist and vilified by the media, Irfan suffers torture in police custody. After escaping, he learns of his mother’s death, which devastates him. While on the run, he encounters Riyaz, the son of Dr. Zazi, who convinces Irfan to join him in planning a terrorist attack by creating sarin gas.
