Description: The Narrator, an automobile recall specialist, feels unfulfilled by his job and possessions, suffering from chronic insomnia. To cope, he attends support groups, pretending to suffer from various illnesses. His peace is disrupted when another impostor, Marla Singer, starts attending the same groups. They agree to divide the groups they attend.
On a flight home from a business trip, the Narrator meets soap salesman Tyler Durden. Upon returning, he discovers his apartment and belongings destroyed in an explosion. Devastated, he contacts Tyler, and they meet at a bar. Tyler criticizes the Narrator for being trapped by consumerism. In the parking lot, Tyler urges the Narrator to hit him, leading to their first fistfight.
The Narrator moves into Tyler’s run-down house in an industrial area. Their fights outside the bar attract growing crowds, eventually moving to the bar’s basement, where Fight Club is born.
Marla overdoses on pills and calls the Narrator for help. He ignores her, but Tyler rescues her, and they begin a relationship, frustrating the Narrator. Tyler warns the Narrator never to discuss him with Marla. The Narrator blackmails his boss for company assets to support Fight Club and quits his job.
As Fight Club grows, new members join, including Robert “Bob” Paulson, whom the Narrator had met in a support group. Tyler expands the group into Project Mayhem, an anti-materialist and anti-corporate organization, without the Narrator’s knowledge. The group engages in increasingly destructive acts, alarming the Narrator. When he confronts Tyler, Tyler reveals he caused the explosion at the Narrator’s apartment.
After Bob is killed during a failed sabotage mission, the Narrator attempts to stop Project Mayhem.
