Description: Ray Kinsella resides with his wife Annie and their daughter Karin on a corn farm in Dyersville, Iowa. Haunted by a strained relationship with his late father John, a passionate baseball fan, Ray fears aging without accomplishing anything meaningful. One evening, while walking through his cornfield, he hears a mysterious voice say, “If you build it, he will come.” This is followed by a vision of a baseball diamond in the cornfield and the appearance of “Shoeless” Joe Jackson, a baseball legend who died in 1951. Inspired, Ray convinces Annie to let him plow part of their crop to build a baseball field, despite the financial risks.
As Ray constructs the field, he shares stories with Karin about the infamous 1919 Black Sox Scandal. Months later, Shoeless Joe returns, bringing along the other seven players from the scandal. However, Annie’s brother Mark cannot see the players and warns the family they are nearing bankruptcy, offering to buy their land. Meanwhile, the voice urges Ray to “ease his pain.”
During a PTA meeting, Annie defends books by Terence Mann, a controversial 1960s author and activist, against attempts to ban them. Ray realizes the voice might be referring to Mann, who once wrote a character named “John Kinsella” and dreamed of playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers. When both Ray and Annie dream of attending a game at Fenway Park with Mann, Ray locates him in Boston. Mann, now disillusioned and reclusive, agrees to attend one game. At the game, Ray hears the voice say, “go the distance,” and sees stats for Archie “Moonlight” Graham, a player who appeared in one game for the New York Giants in 1922 but never got to bat. Mann confirms he also heard the voice and saw the scoreboard. Together, they travel to Minnesota, only to discover Graham passed away years ago.
