Wade chases the intruder outside and strikes him with a baseball bat, accidentally killing him on their lawn. Despite acting in self-defense, Wade is arrested and charged with murder. On the advice of his public defender, he pleads no contest and receives a reduced sentence of three years for involuntary manslaughter.
On the way to prison, Danny Sampson, the leader of the Aryan Brotherhood, stabs another inmate and hides the weapon with a young member named Snowman. In a moment of panic, Snowman places the knife under Wade’s seat, forcing him to deny any involvement. As a result, Wade is placed in solitary confinement while the stabbing is investigated. Lieutenant Jackson, the commanding officer of the Security Housing Unit (SHU), questions Wade about the incident, but Wade refuses to cooperate. Consequently, he is transferred to the SHU under Jackson’s control.
In the SHU, Wade is cellmates with John Smith, a lifer transferred from San Quentin. Inmates in the SHU are locked down for 23 hours a day and are denied visitors for the first three months. Wade soon discovers that the daily hour of yard time is used for inmate fights, which the officers bet on.
