The story begins with Huo Yuanjia defeating three Western opponents: a British boxer, a Belgian lancer, and a Spanish fencer. As he prepares for a fourth match, he reflects on his past. As a young boy, Huo witnesses his father, Huo Endi, teaching martial arts. Despite his asthma, Huo is eager to learn but is discouraged by his father. After seeing his father lose a match to Zhao, who won dishonorably, Huo vows to restore his family’s honor. He secretly practices martial arts and eventually becomes a renowned martial artist in Tianjin. However, his success leads to arrogance and ruthlessness, contrasting with his father’s teachings of mercy.
As Huo’s fame grows, he attracts many followers but also falls into financial trouble due to excessive spending on parties and alcohol. When a rival martial artist, Qin Lei, injures one of his followers, Huo confronts him at a restaurant owned by his childhood friend, Nong Jinsun. Jinsun, tired of Huo’s reckless behavior, ends their friendship. The confrontation turns violent, resulting in Qin’s death. Seeking revenge, Qin’s godson kills Huo’s mother and daughter. Devastated and guilt-ridden, Huo leaves Tianjin and wanders aimlessly until he is rescued by Granny Sun and her blind granddaughter, Yueci.
Over time, living in their village, Huo learns the importance of compassion and humility, transforming his life and approach to martial arts.
