**Storyline:**
In 1971, Raoul Duke and Dr. Gonzo race across the Nevada desert. Duke, under the influence of mescaline, hallucinates about a swarm of giant bats and takes stock of their drug supply. They pick up a hitchhiker and explain their mission: Duke has been assigned by a magazine to cover the Mint 400 motorcycle race in Las Vegas. They’ve stocked up on excessive drugs for the journey and rented a red Chevrolet Impala convertible. The hitchhiker, alarmed by their behavior, flees on foot. Racing to reach Vegas before the hitchhiker can alert the police, Gonzo gives Duke a dose of LSD, warning him there’s little chance of arriving before the drug takes effect. By the time they reach the Las Vegas strip, Duke is fully immersed in his hallucinatory trip, barely managing to check into the hotel as he imagines the clerk as a moray eel and other patrons as lizard-like creatures.
The next day, Duke arrives at the race with his photographer, Lacerda. Overwhelmed and irrational, Duke believes they are in a war zone, fires Lacerda, and returns to the hotel. After consuming more mescaline and inhaling diethyl ether, Duke and Gonzo visit the Bazooko Circus casino but leave quickly due to its chaotic atmosphere. Back in their hotel room, Duke leaves Gonzo alone and attempts his luck at the Big Six wheel. Upon returning, he finds Gonzo, high on LSD, has destroyed the room and is in the bathtub trying to pull a tape player into the water to better hear the song “White Rabbit.” Gonzo pleads with Duke to throw the machine into the water as the song peaks. Instead, Duke throws a grapefruit at Gonzo’s head, locks him in the bathroom, and escapes outside.
