Fátima, known formally as Our Lady of the Holy Rosary of Fátima, is a Catholic title of Mary, the mother of Jesus, based on the Marian apparitions reported in 1917 by three shepherd children in Cova da Iria, Fátima, Portugal. The children, Lúcia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto, claimed to have witnessed these apparitions. The bishop of Leiria, José Alves Correia da Silva, declared the events worthy of belief on October 13, 1930.
In 1946, Pope Pius XII granted a Pontifical decree of canonical coronation to the venerated image, which was later enshrined at the Chapel of the Apparitions of Fátima. The sanctuary was elevated to the status of a minor basilica in 1954.
Sister Lúcia’s memoirs, published in the 1930s, revealed two secrets reportedly conveyed by the Virgin Mary. A third secret was to be disclosed by the Catholic Church in 1960. The events at Fátima gained worldwide attention due to the prophetic and eschatological elements, including predictions related to World War II and future global conflicts, as well as the Virgin Mary’s request for the Consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart.
The apparitions began in 1916 when the three children reported encounters with an Angel in Valinhos. Starting on May 13, 1917, they claimed to have witnessed six apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom they described as “a Lady more brilliant than the Sun.” The children prophesied that prayer would end the Great War and that on October 13 of that year, the Lady would reveal her identity and perform a miracle “so that all may believe.” These prophecies attracted widespread media coverage and drew numerous pilgrims to the site.
