Description: Set in Britain around 1870, *Far from the Madding Crowd* follows Bathsheba Everdene (Carey Mulligan), a spirited young woman working on her aunt’s farm in Dorset. There, she encounters Gabriel Oak (Matthias Schoenaerts), a neighboring farmer who proposes marriage. However, Bathsheba, valuing her independence, declines. After a tragic accident involving Gabriel’s flock, he loses everything and leaves to find work. Meanwhile, Bathsheba inherits a farm from her uncle and takes charge of it.
While seeking employment at a fair, Gabriel observes recruiting officers and meets Fanny Robin, who points out her sweetheart, Sergeant Frank Troy. Gabriel is directed to a farm in Weatherbury, where he arrives just in time to save a barn from fire. The next day, he discovers that the farm’s new owner is Bathsheba, who hires him as a shepherd. Meanwhile, Fanny’s wedding plans with Troy go awry, leaving him heartbroken.
Bathsheba’s life becomes more complicated when she sends a playful Valentine to her wealthy neighbor, William Boldwood (Michael Sheen). Boldwood, both intrigued and offended, proposes marriage. Bathsheba hesitates, earning Gabriel’s disapproval for toying with Boldwood’s feelings. After firing Gabriel, she realizes her mistake and convinces him to return when a crisis arises with her sheep. *Far from the Madding Crowd* portrays themes of love, independence, and resilience in a changing world.
