Storyline:
William Foster, played by Michael Douglas, finds himself trapped in traffic on the hottest day ever recorded in the city’s history. His car’s air conditioning breaks down, forcing him to abandon his vehicle and walk home across Los Angeles, carrying his briefcase. At a convenience store, the Korean owner refuses to give him change for a phone call unless he makes a purchase. Frustrated by the high prices, Foster starts ranting, prompting the owner to grab a baseball bat and demand he leave. In response, Foster takes the bat and destroys much of the store’s merchandise before walking out.
Later, while resting on a hill, Foster is confronted by two Latino gang members who threaten him with a knife and demand his briefcase. He defends himself with the bat, disarms them, and takes their knife. The gang members, now joined by two friends, later spot Foster at a public payphone and open fire. Several bystanders are hit, but Foster remains unharmed. After the gang members’ car crashes, Foster picks up a gun, shoots one of them in the leg, and takes their bag of weapons.
Foster then encounters a panhandler to whom he gives his briefcase, which contains only his lunch. At a fast-food restaurant, Foster tries to order breakfast but is told they have just switched to the lunch menu. A heated argument with the manager ensues, during which Foster accidentally fires his gun into the ceiling. He attempts to calm the frightened staff and customers, orders lunch, and becomes irritated when his burger looks nothing like the one depicted on the menu. After leaving the restaurant, he tries to use a phone booth but destroys it with his gun after being harassed by someone waiting to use the phone.
Falling Down (1993) is a gripping tale of a man’s unraveling journey through a chaotic and unforgiving city.
