Description: “Fagun Haway” (In Spring Breeze) has continued to captivate audiences, maintaining its run in theaters for four consecutive weeks since its release on February 15. The film, set in 1952 Khulna, tells the story of Dipti, a wealthy Hindu girl portrayed by Nusrat Imrose Tisha, and Nasir, a student from Dhaka University played by Siam Ahmed. Their love story unfolds against the backdrop of the language movement, as the town faces turmoil. A relentless Pakistani police officer, portrayed by Yashpal Sharma, enforces the prohibition of Bangla, even silencing a bird that sings a Bangla song, which inspired the film’s title.
Director Tauquir Ahmed emphasizes that the film is not a historical document but a fictional narrative designed to entertain. However, given the significance of the language movement as its setting, viewers naturally expect a deeper exploration of the era and its characters.
Certain elements of the film, such as modern props like Jordana lipstick and Deshal sarees, disrupt the 1952 ambiance, detracting from the historical authenticity. The aristocratic household depicted lacks the essence of 50s Khulna, with its contemporary design choices feeling out of place.
The film’s tone shifts unpredictably, blending humor and drama, with moments of fake ghosts and crossdressing blurring the line between serious storytelling and comedy. While Tisha and Siam deliver strong performances, their characters often take a backseat to Yashpal Sharma’s portrayal of a police officer obsessed with establishing Urdu as Pakistan’s sole state language, an unconventional focus for a central figure.
