In *Everything Must Go* (2010), Nick Halsey, a salesman in Arcadia, Arizona, loses his job after 16 years due to an alcohol-related incident in Denver. Fired and frustrated, he slashes his supervisor’s tires with a Swiss Army Knife—a farewell gift bearing his name—but leaves it behind. Later, he clashes with teenagers outside a convenience store and returns home to find his wife, Catherine, gone. The locks are changed, and his belongings are scattered across the lawn. She leaves a letter explaining she’s leaving him because of the Denver incident and asks him not to contact her.
Nick spends the night on the lawn and meets Samantha, his pregnant neighbor, the next morning. He hires a neighborhood boy, Kenny, to watch his things. Nick soon discovers his credit cards, joint bank account, and phone service have been cut off, and his company car is repossessed. When police arrive to remove him from the property, they nearly arrest him until he contacts his AA sponsor, Detective Frank Garcia, who helps him secure a permit for a yard sale. Nick now has three days to sell his belongings and move on.
With Kenny’s help, Nick begins selling his possessions, though he struggles to part with them. He promises to pay Kenny and teach him baseball in exchange for his assistance. Meanwhile, Nick bonds with Samantha, who is waiting for her husband to join her in their new home. Nick opens up about his struggles, revealing he had been sober for six months until a business trip to Denver, where he blacked out after drinking with a female colleague. Though he has no memory of the night, she filed a complaint, leading to his termination.
The film explores themes of loss, redemption, and the challenges of starting over. Nick’s journey forces him to confront his mistakes and decide what truly matters in his life.
